What Are Dental Veneers?
Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are tailor made to cover the front part of affected teeth. This creates a life-like and highly aesthetic cover that blends seamlessly into your smile. Since veneers completely conceal the tooth they’re placed over, they address a wide range of dental imperfections such as small cracks, chipped enamel, discoloration, and slightly crooked teeth. Once in place, they last for many years with proper care and maintenance. So, they can also be a cost-effective solution if you have several cosmetic issues you’d otherwise need multiple treatments to fix.
The Process of Getting Veneers
Getting your own set of veneers is a relatively simple and less invasive process. It begins with a consultation with Dr. Tehrani who will give you a full examination, discuss your goals for your smile, and begin the procedure.
A thin layer of enamel is first removed from the teeth you want covered. This is done so that the veneers lay flat against your teeth and match up with your gum line. Without this step, they would look bulky, and unnatural—not to mention the risks of damage or dislodgement.
Next, a digital impression is taken of your teeth so your customized veneers can be manufactured to exact specifications at one of our partnered dental labs. We’ll place a set of temporary veneers so you can try out your smile enhancements while you wait for your customized set.
Once your veneers come in, we’ll remove the temporary ones and permanently bond them with your teeth, creating a strong and natural-looking smile.
Benefits of Veneers
Veneers are one of the best cosmetic treatments available, but they’re not all for show! Here are some of the most exciting benefits of dental veneer treatment:
- Stain and Acid Resistance: The porcelain shell covering your treated teeth is resistant to dark pigments and acids that would normally cause enamel wear and discoloration.
- Long-Lasting: Your new veneers can easily last over a decade or longer with a good oral hygiene routine and regular dental checkups.
- Correct Slight Misalignments: If you have a small bite issue, veneers can improve the way your teeth fit together. While they don’t change the position of your pearly whites, they can provide some relief.
- Improved Confidence: Your veneers will make your smile better-looking than ever, increasing your confidence and improving your enjoyment of social situations.
Dental veneers are an incredible way to finally achieve the smile you’ve always wanted. So, if you’re ready to move ahead with veneer treatment and start gaining the benefits of a brighter, more beautiful grin, call us today to schedule a consultation.
Veneers FAQs
Are Veneers Permanent?
Veneers are designed to be more permanent than other cosmetic options, but they don’t last forever. Typically, a new set of veneers will last from 10 to 15 years with proper care and maintenance. Once you undergo veneer treatment, a small amount of enamel will be removed from the front of each treated tooth. This is done so that your veneers will lay flat and look natural instead of bulky. However, once the enamel has been removed, it cannot be replaced, making that part of the treatment permanent.
What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?
A minimal amount of enamel is removed from each tooth, around 0.5 millimeters. This is about the width of a mechanical pencil lead, so it’s not a lot. However, once enamel is lost, it won’t regrow on its own because your teeth don’t have the ability to heal themselves like other parts of your body. Once your veneers are in place, it will shield the tooth from dark pigments and acids somewhat. However, it’s important to continue your regular oral hygiene routine to ensure that the tooth structure underneath doesn’t become compromised by decay.
Can You Whiten Veneers?
Your teeth may look flat and smooth, but they’re actually full of microscopic holes called pores. This is how your pearly whites absorb nutrients like calcium from the food you eat to stay strong. These pores can also trap pigments from dark-colored drinks and vibrant foods like berries.
Teeth whitening treatments penetrate these pores to break up and remove stains, however, veneers are made of non-porous porcelain. This means that they will resist stains but also cannot be whitened. If a brighter smile is in your future, be sure to tell Dr. Tehrani so she can whiten your teeth before performing your veneer treatment. Otherwise, your new smile will need to be replaced to match.
Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?
There are far fewer restrictions on what you can eat with permanent veneers than temporary ones. However, there are some universal types of food you’ll want to limit like hard, crunchy, and sticky foods. These can crack, chip, or dislodge your enhancements, especially your temporaries. So, try to avoid things like ice, raw fruits and veggies, and hard or chewy candy like taffy or caramels. Alcohol should also be limited as the chemicals can break down the bonding cement used to keep your smile in place.
